ACTIVE DUTY: 13 July 1942, as per Special Order 174, 1 July 1942, War Department, Washington, D. C. 2nd Lt. Report Schuykill Ars. , Philadelphia, PA, Phys Exam. If Phys Qual. Thence to AFFTC, Chehaw, Ala. / 22 July 1942, reported to Tuskegee Army Air Field, Alabama. / 24 July 1942, Assigned to the 99th Pursuit Squadron, Tuskegee Army Air Field and was assigned duties of Mess officer. Also, Summary Court and Investigation Officer / 12 December 1942. Promoted to lst Lt. , AUS, Special Order 338, War Department, Washington, D.C. / 2 April 1943 left Tuskegee AAF for Camp Shanks, NY for shipment overseas. Arrived on 4 April 1943. / 11 April 1943 appointed Mess Officer on the S. S. Mariposa military transport, New York Port of Embarkation, per SO #5, Colonel William E. Burr, Transport Commander, effective April 13, 1943. / 16 April 1943 departed New York Port of Embarkation and arrived in Casablanca, French Morocco, North Africa.
24 April 1943. Camp Don B. Passage until 26 April 1943./ 27 April 1943 arrived in Qued N'Ja, Fez, Morocco, North Africa and began Combat Training. / 30 May 1943, Moved to Fardjouna, Tunisia, North Africa. / 2 June 1943- 99th First Combat Mission. Was attached to the 33rd Fighter Group. Mission was against the Italian Island of Pantelleria. / 19 July 1943 moved to Licata, Sicily, 17 October 1943 moved to Foggia, Italy, and was integrated into the 79th Fighter Group under the command of Col. Earl E. Bates, Jr. / 15 January 1944, 99th with the 79th Fighter Group moved to Capodichino Airdrome, Naples, Italy, 99th pilots destroyed 8 enemy aircraft over Anzio and Nattuno Beachheads on 27 January 1944 and 8 more from 28 January to 7 February 1944. / 28 January 1944. Promoted to Captain, AUS, AC, Headquarters, 12 Air Force, APO 650.
